A unique opportunity

This is a unique opportunity for people perhaps interested in a career in this area, and with some family support experience. The Court volunteers work very closely with the court staff to support families of defendants. They are able to provide them with information on the court processes, for example what might happen next, and help to alleviate some of the stresses felt by families who attend court. It can be a very daunting place, so the volunteers need to empathetic to this and also understand the importance of confidentiality and professionalism.The role of the court support volunteer is to go to court and provide support, information and signposting to professionals for identified families in anticipation of sentence.  

Job description of court volunteer

  • To attend an informative volunteer induction programme held at Castle Gate
  • To complete a full criminal disclaimer
  • To attend Gloucester Crown Court
  • To liaise with the court co-ordinator and other court professionals
  • To explain our services, using material provided
  • To attend appropriate meetings
  • To understand and follow the Castle Gate Family Trust guidelines and policies
  • To support families by providing information and signposting to other services
  • Occasionally to speak directly to defendants
  • To record outcomes efficiently
  • Agree and follow the policies, statements and procedures of the Trust and other establishments
  • Obtain courts listings

• Be able to work confidently alone and as part of a team
• Have good communication skills
• Have a calm disposition
• Have a firm yet sympathetic approach to challenging situations

• No qualifications or experience necessary
• It is beneficial to be computer literate
