Support for children and young people

Helping you to help your children

"What does my dad have for breakfast?"      "What does dad's room look like?"

These are just some of the questions that might be worrying your child.

If you have a child or are a young person who is dealing with having a parent in prison, our Children and Young People's Support Worker is here to help.  She offers an informal service providing information to children and young people around the impact of having their parent in prison - she is someone for them to talk to, to ask questions, to say what might be bothering them.

For example, children are encouraged to keep memory boxes, the Support Worker will provide materials and help the child to produce one. This is a safe places for memories, photos, letters etc… This has been a successful piece of work with children of all ages.

We offer tailored support, depending on the child's needs.  The Support Worker assesses their needs and draws up a support plan.  The child’s school plays a crucial part in the support provided, and all professionals adhere to the confidentiality policy.

Children and young people are also supported with letter writing, and card making. The Support Worker is able to provide materials and encourage the child with this, sometimes it is difficult for us to put pen to paper, especially in a difficult time in our lives. The children and young people find this so beneficial as they sometimes find it difficult to do at home.

The Support Worker will provide a listening ear and is able to refer the children and young people onto other services that may be useful or relevant.
